You may have noticed that all the feature films on FORMED now have a description of the public performance clause at the bottom of each movie description.

We have added this legal clause in order to clarify and help eliminate any confusion that you or your parishioners may be experiencing.

To summarize the public performance of feature films:

  • The movies with this clause attached are not available for “public performance,” by copyright law.

  • “Public performance” includes parishes, because they are legally considered public spaces.

  • These movies may not be shown in a public space, such as a parish, even if they are shown to a limited or “invitation-only” group, or whether or not an admission fee is charged.

  • The public performance clause does indicate that “non-classroom” use is prohibited. Therefore, using these films in “face-to-face teaching facilities” is permitted.

  • All films may be viewed, without restriction, with friends and/or family in a private setting.

  • Any films without this public performance clause listed on FORMED may be viewed without restriction in a public setting.

We hope this will help clarify movie-viewing for you and your parishioners. Please email parishcare@formed.org if you have any questions or would like further clarification.
