On May 13, 1981, during the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Saint John Paul II miraculously survived three shots at point-blank range by a professional assassin. On the one year anniversary of the assassination attempt, he traveled to Fatima, Portugal to offer his gratitude to Mary as he was certain “it was a mother’s hand that guided the bullet’s path” and saved his life. He renewed his consecration to Mary and in his homily taught the importance of Marian consecration for all Catholics. As Saint Louis de Montfort writes in True Devotion to Mary, consecration to Jesus through Mary is “the surest, easiest, and most perfect means” to becoming a saint.
